The Safe Support directory was created as a response to the need Abide Counseling’s founder and therapist, Brooke Lamb, observed whilst working with many clients from the LGBTQIA2S+ community over the past 10 years. Specifically, for clients living in areas of the country with increasingly hostile legislation targeted towards removing the civil rights of queer folk, it can be very difficult to find providers they can trust.

Many therapists, if asked, report they are respectful of the queer community in the sense that all mental health providers are required by law and ethics to do so. However, not all of them are explicitly and unreservedly affirming of queer clients. Tolerating is not the same as affirming. Also, many providers do not have training in what it means to be a queer/trans-affirming mental health provider, and this can create situations where queer clients run into trans or homophobic, while well-meaning, providers.

Feeling emotionally, physically, and mentally safe is integral to successful psychotherapy, and this cannot be achieved if clients do not feel confident they are walking in to see a fully-affirming and well-trained therapist.

The Safe Support Middle-TN directory includes only clinicians able to work in Middle-TN (in-person or virtually) who are fully queer-affirming, and are confident they have the necessary knowledge and clinical skills to put being affirming into their therapeutic practice.
